Is a state university founded in 1991. It comprises eight
faculties and a university institute, namely the Faculty of
Economics, the Faculty of Philosophy, the Pedagogical
Faculty, the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Theology,
the Faculty of Health and Social Studies, the Faculty of
Agriculture, and the newly founded Faculty of Fishery and
Water Protection. The ninth body of the university is the
Institute of Physical Biology in Nové Hrady.

We are a research university focusing mainly on natural
sciences, social sciences, and humanities. A significant
aspect of the scientific research activities is close cooperation
with the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. Recent
surveys have shown the university to be most successful in
science and research, lifelong learning, and its ability to
focus on regional issues.

The University of South Bohemia
This is a public university which was established in 1991. From 1st September 2009 the university consists of eight faculties and one institute (Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Philosophy, Faculty of Pedagogy, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Theology, Faculty of Health and Social Studies, Faculty of Agriculture and the Faculty of Fisheries and Protection of Water/ established as of 1st September 2009; one of the establishing parts is the original Research Institute of Fish Culture and Hydrobiology of the University of South Bohemia in Vodňany). The ninth part of the university is the Institute of Physical Biology in Nové Hrady.

The long-term intention of the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice (JU) is to raise its profile as a research university focused in particular on the natural sciences, social sciences and arts. An important part of the university’s scientific activities involves close cooperation with the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. The strengths of the university are in the fields of science and research, lifelong education and the ability to focus on regional issues.
Education follows accredited Bachelor’s, Master and Doctoral study programmes, which create a wider science base for 229 fields of study specialised in daily and combined forms of study. Lectures and seminars for 24 fields of study are provided in English, for 3 fields also in German.
All parts of the university (in different forms) also provide doctoral study programmes (Ph.D.) at selected science branches. Graduates of some Master programmes at the Faculty of Philosophy, Faculty of Pedagogy, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of Health and Social Studies may be awarded an academic degree - PhDr., RNDr. and ThDr. - for which the above referenced parts of the university are authorised.
The Faculty of Philosophy, Science, Theology, Health and Social Studies, Agriculture and the Faculty of Fisheries and Protection of Waters are authorised to carry out an inaugural dissertation of associate professors; the Faculty of Philosophy, Science, Health and Social Studies, Agriculture and the Faculty of Fisheries and Protection of Waters additionally holds proceedings for the appointment of university professors.
Within lifelong education parts of the university offer a broad range of programmes. They include Bachelor’s, Master and Doctoral programmes, as well as complementary, qualification, specialised, follow-up and interest studies. A part of lifelong education is the University of the Third Age (U3V), further education of pedagogical employees, education of university employees and a summer school. The lifelong education programmes are provided in daily, combined or distance form of study.
In the academic year 2008/09 over 12,000 of students studied at the University of South Bohemia. The interest in studying at the University of South Bohemia exceeds capacity by four times every year; for the academic year 2009/10 almost 12,000 applications to attend the first year.
